I agree with Jennifer, nothing sounds better then being able to read a good book surf on your iPad while rocking your mini to sleep. Rockid is from the design studio Onterpduo.
Actually, they would lose federal funding if they only give the exam in English:
So yes, the decision belongs to the governor. However, Governor Riley (who has been a consistent supporter of English as the official state language) has maintained that based on the US Supreme Court ruling in Sandoval, returning to an English-only driver’s license examination would put our federal transportation...
Lately I’ve been seeing horrible code. Sometimes it’s horribly written. Sometimes you know that it will be ridiculously hard to maintain. Sometimes it is just plain wrong. Way too many times it is over-designed, which also makes it hard to maintain.
A few examples from various projects:
Code written to process credit cards that displayed the entire number in the checkout page. If you are going...

I had to research Origami folding instructions for a current client and stumbled upon this Origami Club Site and now all I want to do is fold. fold. fold.

Don’t waste too much time on picking a perfect name for your product. It doesn’t matter very much. One thing we learned early on talking to Basecamp customers: Many of them didn’t even know that the app was called Basecamp. They called it “GroupHub” or “ProjectPath” because that was their project URL. Didn’t stop them from using it (or paying for it) though. And what about picking a name that’s...

I recently had to troubleshoot an Apache server. Twice.
After almost an hour of doing some research, I realized that someone had put application specific configuration in httpd.conf – This is a bad practice, when you have many virtual hosts in the same server.
You should follow this pattern:
Place all the VirtualHosts configurations in /etc/httpd/conf.d/ as .conf files (eg....

How much of the time you invest in a project is spent preparing excuses, creating insurance, seeking deniability and covering your ass just in case things go poorly in the end?
At some point, that effort becomes so great you never actually ship anything, which of course is the very best protection against failure.

This is the portfolio of a young talented photographer from Brazil: Carlos, also known as “oo-rein-oo” on deviantart. Carlos has very smart eye to catch the shots; the result is just perfect, showing not just the beautiful picture, but a vast number of meanings that a photo can achieve inside people’s mind.

Howard Greenstein from Inc. recently interviewed Naval and me for a post called 5 Questions for an Angel Investor:
Howard Greenstein: How does a start-up know when it is ready for Angel funding?
Venture Hacks: If you’ve just got an idea, check out incubators like Y Combinator and TechStars. Or you might be able to convince someone who knows you well (a former boss or family member) to invest....

This is not a good reason to continue doing something that doesn’t make you happy:
Because you have been doing it for 1, 2 or N years.
Work on something that makes you happy every day.
Some jobs simply suck. That’s why Berlin-based agency Scholz & Friends came up with these amazingly creative ads to help people realize that it’s time to move on to the next opportunity. Created for German job search company Jobsintown.de, these incredibly visual ads are not only funny, but effective as well.

Why is the Pope so terrifying? And that’s even without taking the latest round of pedophilia scandals into consideration. Via Buzzfeed, some of the most horrifying, dream-haunting pictures of the current Pope:

One of the best ways to get a debate going into the entrepreneurial world is to throw the “Nature versus Nurture” hand-grenade into a conversation. The question is whether you are born with innate entrepreneurial talent or whether you can be taught to operate like an entrepreneur.

Whether you have some productive reason to search for stats, or you just need a daily factoid fix, Harper’s magazine’s online “Index” search will pull up decades’ worth of short, sourced blurbs on 1000s of topics … and open up delightful rabbit holes by linking one factoid to other, connected, topic searches. A search for...
You won’t find one, so don’t waste your time.
Chipmunks, wolves and other wild animals rarely get jealous. The number one emotion among wild animals isn’t vanity or happiness: it’s fear.
Fear is everywhere in the animal kingdom, because fear is a great way to stay alive. Fear is hard-wired into successful species… it doesn’t need to be taught.
You guessed it,...
Ning is laying off 40% of its staff and dumping free versions of its service. That’s a shitty day for the people who lost their job and the folks left behind without their coworkers. I went through a few rounds back in the dotcom days and fun it was not. But I can’t help but be puzzled by the coverage of this. Here’s TechCrunch on the situation: While the massive layoffs are obviously a big hit to...
I saw this chart in Morgan Stanley’s latest Internet trends report.
Even though I’ve been saying for years that social networking will one day usurp email, it’s a bit shocking to see that it has.
There are some caveats. My kids use Facebook as their primary inbox (they also use gmail). So some of what they do on Facebook is actually email.
But even so, it looks like...

Why Rails over Java frameworks, like Struts 2?
Here are my top 4 reasons.
1. Convention over configuration
Rails was built with this concept in mind. After programming in Java and Java EE for more than four years, I have enough experience to compare Rails to the frameworks I used in Java. Most Java web frameworks require a lot of...

BookArc for iPad (via iLounge)
I have featured TwelveSouth’s products many times before here. They are elegant, minimal, and darn near made to be posted here. Well, they have taken their popular BookArc for Macbook and made a version for the iPad which will be out “soon”. I’ll be ordering one of these.
Want.
